Ann McCabe Mattia
Born in Ireland, she was loving, kind, and always willing to help
Ann McCabe Mattia of Wall Township, N.J., passed away at Jersey Shore University Hospital on Feb. 5, 2020, with her husband and children at her side. She was 89 years old and had suffered disability and illness for a number of years.
Ann was born in the town of Bailieboro in County Cavan, Ireland, to Katie and Philip McCabe. She came to America at age 15 to live with an aunt and uncle in New Jersey, where she completed her education and went on to be an administrator with a major financial institution. She became a citizen of the United States. She met her husband Gus through mutual friends in 1950, but it was not to be at that time, as the sudden war in Korea took him away for four years. They were married shortly after his return. That was more than 65 years ago.
She leaves, in addition to Gus, loving children: Katherine (Angwin, California); Steven (Flagstaff, Arizona) and David (Redding, Connecticut). Two other daughters had passed earlier: Suzanne Berman (Flagstaff, Arizona (2002) and Dr. Elizabeth Hart (Jupiter, Florida (2016). Loving grandchildren: Dr. Michael S. Mattia, Jr., M.D. (Kalamazoo, Michigan); Leslie Sawyer (and husband Steve, San Antonio, Texas); Thatcher Hart (Jupiter, Florida); Benjamin Berman (and wife Nina, Scottsdale, Arizona); Matthew Berman (Flagstaff, Arizona); and Andrew (Ayer, Massachusetts). Loving great-grandchildren: Mark, Bradley, Katelyn, Joshua and Allison Sawyer; and Paxton Berman (Scottsdale, Arizona). Cousins: Moira and Andy Geraghty (Ridgewood, New Jersey); Bobby Clark (Wantagh, New York); Hugh and Bonnie Smith (Warwick, New York); and Nick Smith (Termon, County Cavan, Ireland).
Ann was a gift from Heaven to humankind. Loving, kind, understanding and always willing to help with an encouraging word, she was loved by all who knew her. She was the meaning of love and will be dearly missed.
The family of Ann Mattia wish to acknowledge the help and comfort she was shown throughout her illness by doctors and nurses in the Wall Township area, including those at Jersey Shore Hospital. Your skill and dedication were important to her. You have our deepest gratitude.
Arrangements were private and were handled by the Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan, N.J.
