Alex R. Maccia, 91, of Cedar Grove, N.J., died on Dec. 21, 2019.
Funeral Services will begin on Friday at 9:30 a.m. from Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, N.J. 07009. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cedar Grove, with interment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J. Visiting hours will be offered Thursday from 4 p.m. through 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Memories and condolences may be shared at shookscedargrove.com.
Born in Newark, N.J., he grew up on 17th Street and attended Bloomfield High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Fordham University, where he won the Math Medal. Afterwards, he graduated from Seton Hall University with his master's degree.
Alex began his career in education as a math teacher, was promoted to vice principal and retired as principal in the Elmwood Park School District. He was a member of the Cedar Grove UNICO and Knights of Columbus. He was a devout Catholic who attended Mass daily.
A proud Italian American, he loved the Yankees and in particular Joe DiMaggio. He loved swing music and relaxed with his family at the shore house in Spring Lake, N.J.
He was predeceased by his parents, Vito Charles Maccia and Theresa (nee Caputo), and his sister, Jeanne Maccia.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 62 years, Frances A. Maccia (nee Verrone); devoted children, Theresa De Joseph and her husband, Michael, Charles Maccia and his wife, Susan, Alex Maccia, and Catherine Maccia; cherished grandchildren, Alexa, Nicole, and Christine.
