Beatrice 'Betty Jane' Maher
Ms. Beatrice "Betty Jane" Maher, 94, died at her home in Verona, N.J., on Oct. 21, 2019.
A Funeral Mass will be offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Verona on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. Visiting in the Prout Funeral Home (proutfuneralhome.com), 370 Bloomfield Ave., Verona is on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m.
Born and raised in Jersey City, N.J., Ms. Maher lived in South Orange, N.J., prior to moving to Verona in 1986. She graduated from Fordham University with a bachelor's degree in speech and education and from New York University with a master's degree in speech pathology.
She was a speech language pathologist for the Newark Board of Education for 50 years, retiring in 1995.
Ms. Maher was an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Church in Verona, serving as lector and Eucharistic minister. She also was a member of the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Auxiliary, American Association of University Women-Caldwell Chapter, Fordham University 1841 Society and a former member of the Maplewood Country Club and Forest Hill Field Club. She volunteered at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, St. Catherine Church in Spring Lake, N.J., and Fordham University.
Ms. Maher was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Clara (nee Jocham) Maher.
She is survived by her dear friends, Kathleen Brand and Shawn Brand; her goddaughters, Mai Brand and Allison Brand, and Paul San Filippo.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation would be appreciated.
