Dorothy Mae Lowenthal
Lover of travel and adventure, sports and the arts, 'remembered for her big personality and even bigger heart', of Verona, 94
Dorothy Mae Lowenthal, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Oct. 10, 2019 in Verona, N.J., at the age of 94.
Dorothy was born on April 18, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Dr. Phillip and Lillian Brody.
Dorothy received her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and later went on to earn two master's degrees.
Shortly after college, she met and married Dr. Martin Lowenthal. They raised their three children, Wendy, Hank and Steve, in Montclair, N.J., and were very active in the community.
Dorothy served as the president of Hadassah at her temple for many years and was also passionate about her work in the Montclair public schools.
A lover of travel and adventure, Dorothy and her beloved husband visited destinations all over the world, collecting treasures and memories in every place they went. Additionally, she loved the arts, frequently visiting museums, galleries and the theater in New York City.
Dorothy enjoyed playing golf, was an avid sports fan, and hated the Yankees with a passion. She never met a crossword puzzle she couldn't complete and at any given time, you would find her reading multiple books, magazines and newspapers while listening to her classical music.
Dorothy, affectionately known as "Nanny," always cherished time with her grandchildren, whether it was attending a game, a concert, or simply spoiling them with an endless supply of Hershey's miniatures chocolates during a sleepover. Later in life, she became an avid bridge and canasta player, never missing her regular weekly games at the Claridge II.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Marty, and her son, Hank, and is survived by her daughter, Wendy and her husband, Gary S. Young; her son, Steve; her grandchildren, Rebecca (Brad), Jon (Lexi), Bill (Kate), Erica (Nick), Lee (Andrea), Marissa, Jannina, Dana and Jonah, and her 13 great-grandchildren. Dorothy also leaves behind her beloved companion and friend, Terry Debska. Dorothy will be remembered for her big personality and even bigger heart. She will be thought of often and missed always.
A graveside service for family will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019, at 11 a.m., at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, N.Y. The family will not be sitting Shiva due to the Jewish holidays.
