STEPHENS, Barbara Ann Robertson September 22, 1943 August 21, 2019 Dallas, Texas Barbara Ann Robertson Stephens, age 75, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on August 21, 2019, after a three-year battle with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). Barbara was a devoted wife, loving mother; adoring big sister; cherished cousin and dedicated friend. Her skills on the golf course were only rivaled by the delicious dishes and baked goods from her kitchen. She was born on September 22, 1943, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Iva Ora Adams and Benjamin Elmo Robertson. She is preceded in death by both of her parents. Barbara was raised in Lynchburg but spent many weekends and holidays down in the country where both her parents' extended families and many cousins lived. She graduated from Brookville High School in 1961. Afterwards attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. In 1963, Barbara began dating a young man who was formerly her neighbor and often referred to her as "the kid" as she was six years his junior. Now adults, Barbara and Sidney B. Stephens, Jr., were married on December 13, 1963. They had two children: Keith and Natalie. The family later moved to Dallas in 1973. Barbara and Sid were married for 53 wonderful years. Barbara is preceded in death by her sweetheart and golf partner Sid who passed away in 2017. They travelled the world together for Sid's work and their golfing vacations. During those travels, Barbara would never miss an opportunity to stop and see every roadside "scenic point." Barbara worked for a variety of organizations during her life time even as she fulfilled her most important and treasured role of mother. She worked for General Electric in Virginia; and the Plano Independent School District and Granite Properties both in the greater Dallas area. Her bosses and coworkers knew her to be honest, dedicated, and a stickler for rules, deadlines and work quality. Throughout her life, she was also an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and volunteered and served in many church capacities throughout the decades. She was a gifted pianist and was often a musical accompanist at her church. Barbara was known to be an exceptional athlete learning to play and compete in tennis, softball and golf as an adult. Taking up golf after the age of 40, she led the Stonebridge Country Club Women's Golf Association to several inter-club championships. She also had not one, not two, but three documented holes-in-one. She also loved to demonstrate her affection for others through food. She was an excellent southern cook and baked some of the best cakes and pies anyone could hope to taste. Barbara was born with a green thumb and never met a yard she wouldn't mow, a weed she wouldn't pull or plant she couldn't bring back to life. As part of her love for early American history, she began researching her own family tree and was an active and skilled genealogist. She is survived by her loving and devoted children, their spouses and her grandchildren. They include: son (Keith Stephens) and daughter-in-law (Maria Stephens) of Sausalito, Calf; daughter (Natalie Clarkson) and son-in-law (Jonathan Clarkson) of Dallas, TX; and four grandchildren Cole Stephens (27), Brooke Ward (23), Jacob Clarkson (17), and Andrew Clarkson (14). She is also survived by her sister (Susan McDaniel) and her family as well as numerous cousins and extended family members in Virginia. A memorial service for Barbara will be held Saturday, August 31, 2019, at 11:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 2401 Legacy Road, Plano, TX, 75023. Barbara will be buried at Restland in Dallas, TX. The family respectful requests that in lieu of sympathy flowers that contributions go to the ALS Association (www.alsa.org).
