PEPPARD, Alan Norman Alan Norman Peppard died peacefully in his sleep in Dallas on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the age of 56. The son of Vernon and Paula Peppard, Alan was born on January 25, 1963 in Dallas at Baylor Hospital. Following his three older siblings, Alan began his education in kindergarten at The Greenhill School, where he founded his lifelong love of learning, and graduated in 1981. He went on to attend SMU, graduating in 1985 with a degree in political science and a newfound passion for journalism. Throughout his life, Alan found excitement in history. An avid researcher, he fed this enthusiasm through personal projects he could bring into his work. He could quote literature and film to fit any situation. He knew the history of modern music and cinema as if he had known every artist. Alan found a personal message in all art he encountered. This internalization made him a musician in his own right, teaching himself the guitar and piano. While never known for his athletic ability, Alan established talent in esoteric activities, such as flying as a pilot like his father or bragging the ability to snow ski backwards. Alan used this myriad of skills to become an outstanding journalist for thirty years with the Dallas Morning News. His story telling, whether in print or at a social event, captivated his audiences. He began his writing career at 24 as an intern at D Magazine, absorbing all aspects of print media. From the complexities of economics to the physical functions of the printing process, Alan had a natural curiosity about how parts worked in a system. This interest reflects in the depth and attention to detail in his analytical writing. Alan spent the last two years working with his family's business-Geomap Company. Alan was proud to continue the legacy of his parents who founded the company in 1959. Through his work at Geomap, he maintained an equal level of passion in his work through extensive research. Alan's legacy of fine journalism and storytelling should be an inspiration for any aspiring journalist. He had deep and profound friendships with innumerable members of the Dallas community, and he will be deeply missed. Alan's happiest moments were when he was spending time with his wife of 24 years, Jennifer, and his three daughters, 18-year-old twins Amanda and Isabel and 10-year-old Charlotte. With Jennifer, he reintroduced the passion for travel that he gained from his father. Through their adventures, he could further immerse himself in history, allowing him to weave even more compelling narratives. With his daughters, he strived to cultivate in them the same spirit of discovery he so valued. He loved teaching them chess and igniting their own individual journeys into music and history. Alan was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Bob Peppard. His survivors include his wife Jennifer, daughters, Amanda, Isabel and Charlotte, sisters Katherine Brewer and Mary Ann Peppard, and her daughter Madison Peppard. Services for Alan will be held Thursday, June 13th in the Sanctuary of Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alan Peppard may be made to Center for Brain Health with the University of Texas at Dallas or The Hockaday School.
