Alexandra Brittain Knox
Alexandra Brittain Knox, aged 77, died peacefully in her sleep early Monday morning, March 11, 2019, surrounded by many who loved her, at Magnolias of Lancaster, Pa.
Born the second of three daughters to Mary Lee Trimble and Raymond Franklin Brittain, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Alex attended the Winchester Thurston School, Wellesley College, where she majored in French, and later New York University, where she obtained a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology.
She met her future husband, Van William Knox III ("Squire"), outside the Princeton University Chapel in a joint Wellesley - Princeton Glee Club weekend. It truly was love at first sight. She spent the rest of her life in Philadelphia, Pa.; Lancaster, Pa.; Chatham Twp., N.J.; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sullivan, Maine, and Naples, Fla.
She was the devoted mother of a son, Van William Knox IV ("Rafe"), and a daughter, Heather Victoria Trimble Knox, and had seven grandchildren. Alex devoted her professional life to the young and the old with speech and swallowing disorders, and when not working traveled the world, played the oboe, and gardened. She adored dogs. In her later years, she became very involved with contemplative prayer at Saint Monica's Episcopal Church in Naples, Fla.
She was predeceased by her husband and is survived by her children, grandchildren, and sisters, Victoria Seckel of Bismarck, N.D., and Elizabeth Braun of Pittsburgh.
Intelligent, vivacious, amazing, and fiercely devoted to all she held dear, Alex influenced many and will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, Pa. 17540 with a lunch to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grane Hospice of York, Pa.,or to any .
