Alexander John Butrym, 84, of Barnegat, N.J., passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Trenton, N.J., and was formerly of Hamilton Township and East Windsor, N.J., before moving to Barnegat in 2000.
Alexander graduated from Trenton Catholic Boys High School, LaSalle College and Duquesne University. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in English literature from Rutgers University. In his professional life, Alexander was a professor of English at Seton Hall University and chairman of the English department.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Barnegat and St. Anthony of Padua in Hightstown, N.J. He was a member of several professional organizations and after retiring from academia, enjoyed working as a park ranger at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. He also pursued a wide range of personal interests such as wood carving, chair caning, and other folk arts.
Alexander was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne Anne, in 2016. He is survived by his children: Anne and her husband, Yafie Osman; Michael Butrym and his wife, Abigail, and Alexis and her husband, Alexander MacFarlane. He has four grandchildren: Emma, Spenser, Genevieve and Rhiannon. He is also survived by his brother, Ed Butrym, and many loving family and friends.
Viewing will be offered on Thursday, June 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. at Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, 335 S. Main St. (Route 9), Barnegat.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 747 West Bay Ave., Barnegat. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, Manahawkin, N.J.
