Al Lovi
Faleceu
Al "Cookie" LoviMay 12, 1935-January 6, 2019"Si va o non si va? Andiamo!" (Shall we go or not go? Let's go!) And so the time has come to say "Ciao" to my family and friends.
Alfredo Pasquale Lovi, loving husband, father to three children and "Papa Al" to his 10 grandsons, peacefully passed away in Sonoma County on January 6, 2019, at the age of 83.
Born on May 12, 1935, in South San Francisco, California, to Italian immigrants Alfredo Lovi and Civilina (Petrini), Al was nicknamed "Cookie" by his mother because "he looked like an Italian butter cookie—curly blond hair with rosy-red cheeks." Al was destined to shine!
At a young age, Al worked for his father in their family grocery store in South San Francisco. After high school, he worked as a butcher for his uncle, Frank Petrini. He then opened his own gourmet delicatessen, Maison Gourmet, in San Francisco and Marin with business partner, Roland Digrazia.
Al catered many weddings and parties. He even catered an event at the home of Francis Ford Coppola. He mentored many young people in the art of the delicatessen business, some of whom went on to become very successful in this specialty market. He also served as a professor at The Deli University hosted by Columbus Salami Company.
He loved food, family and friends. His door was always open! You were always greeted with a big "Hiiii," and warm hug followed by "Are you hungry? Let me make you something." Al's greatest gift was his big heart and his ease in bringing family and friends together to celebrate life.
Al had a passion for buying and selling old cars, and coordinated numerous car shows where he was the emcee, head chef and provider of prizes for the winners. He could talk about cars for hours! Al also was a skillful artist, drawing cars and beautiful old homes in black ink. Early on he taught art classes at San Francisco City College. Some of his drawings hung in businesses in Windsor, California.
Al is survived by his wife, Anne; his children, Mark (Janis), Laura (Holly), Linda (Arnie Prien); sister, Marina Crosariol; grandsons, Nick Lovi, Jeff Wester (Kathleen), Bryan Wester, Andrew Wester (Sarah), Matt Lovi, Chris Lovi (Krista), Michael Prien, Cory Prien and Elliot Prien; great-grandson,Theo Wester; niece, LeAnn Thornton, nephew, Steve Crosariol (Judy); and many great nephews, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his father Alfredo Lovi, mother Civilina (Petrini), first wife, Mary Crowley (Michael) and brother-in-law, Leo Crosariol.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Al's life on Friday, February 8, 2019, at noon at Piatti Restaurant, 625 Redwood Highway, Mill Valley. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the at www.alz.org/norcal.
