Albert William WaightNative San Franciscan, SFFD Battalion Chief, Retired, passed into peace on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the age of 99.
Born January 23, 1919 to Floyd H. Waight and Lillian J. Widman, they lived in the home that his father built in 1908 at 7th and Kirkham. It was here that Bill learned to work with his hands. He became a machinist and developed a love for all things mechanical. Bill married his Clipper St. sweetheart, Helen Shaw on February 17, 1941. In 1958 they moved to their new Twin Peaks neighborhood. His basement on Marview remains a menagerie of metal and machine. A prized collection of cartoon lunch boxes line the walls, brimming with a lifetime of nuts and bolts.
In 1953 "Al" joined the SFFD. Barely escaping the fiery ledge of an apartment building on January 20th 1968, Al was later honored with the Class A-Sullivan Award for saving the lives of two sisters. Battalion Chief Al Waight retired in 1983 after 30 years of service to the City of San Francisco. In 2016, Al was once again honored as the oldest living, retired member of the SFFD and named Grand Marshall of their 150th Anniversary parade. Bill was a "colorful" story teller with an impressive memory. He loved creating with his own two hands. He loved the Fire Department, his extended family and the heritage that San Francisco offers to each of us.
Albert William Waight is survived by his loving partner, Nancy Truman, his two sons, William (Barbara) and Kevin (Jeanette) Waight. He was "Grampa" to Christopher (Monica Guzman) Waight, Hillary (Jim) Castillo, Jennifer G. Waight and Marideth M. Waight of San Francisco. Bill is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Balin and Arwen Castillo and Ayden and Avery Guzman-Waight.
Celebration of Life services to commemorate Bill's 100th birthday will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday January 26, 2019 at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City.
