HEWETT, Arthur Edward Arthur Edward Hewett, 84, born in Dallas, Texas, on October 16, 1935 to Clara Wagoner and Arthur Elton Hewett, passed away in Dallas on Tuesday, March 24. He is predeceased by his loving wife Petie, his daughter Julie Anne Hewett, his parents and brothers, Bernard Elton Hewett and Gene Wagoner Hewett. Art graduated from North Dallas High School in 1953 and worked his way through SMU, where he was a member and then President of Delta Chi Fraternity. He received a bachelor's degree from the School of Business in 1957. He then attended and graduated from the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, and proudly served on active duty for 3 1/2 years. In 1959, he married his college sweetheart, Helen Yvonne "Petie" Barry. Following his U.S. Navy service, he attended the SMU School of Law, serving as business manager of the law review, and graduating in 1965. He joined the Dallas law firm of Akin, Vial, Hamilton, Koch and Tubb, where he became partner in 1968. In 1970, he co-founded and served as managing partner of Hewett Johnson Swanson and Barbee. The firm began with 5 lawyers and by 1980 had become the largest Dallas law firm and the first to be comprised of more than 100 lawyers. He was deeply proud of the firm, its outstanding lawyers and professional staff. Art cherished his co-founding partners John Johnson, Wally Swanson and Lin Barbee, as well as Richard Massman who was the sole founding associate of the firm, who also became a partner. In 1980, Art ceased practicing law and entered the real estate development business, becoming President of Thompson Realty Corporation. Thereafter, he co-founded Republic Property Group, one of the largest master-planned community and subdivision developers in the Dallas area, serving as President until 1999. At that time and he and his wife, Petie, moved to their vacation home in Snowmass Village, Colorado, where they thrived on mountain sports, family and friends. Art was very active within his community and served on numerous boards of banks, corporations, along with civic and educational organizations. Soft spoken, yet powerful with words, Art could flash a smile that would light up a room. He was an incredibly loyal man, who loved the Lord, cherished his mother deeply, and loved and adored Petie beyond words. He supported, cared for and loved his three children and five grandchildren fiercely. Art's friendships were deep and the stories he recounted were classics. From the hunting excursions, trips abroad, sailing across the water, times at Cedar Creek lake and then Colorado to the countless times sitting on the deck at the Grove, Art seemed to have never met a stranger. Those that knew him, are better for it. He is survived by his son, Matthew Sabin Hewett and his wife, Shelly Lackey Hewett, with children Seth and Sally of Bakersfield, CA, and daughter Clara Wagoner "Cissy" and her husband, Craig Allen Jones, and their children Hudson, Helen "Elle", and Georgia of Dallas. A private, family graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 2. If desired, donations may be made to Highland Park United Methodist Church or to the Helen B. Hewett ALS Research Fund @ Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
