MITCHELL, SR., Charles Dale Dr. Charles Dale Mitchell, Sr. lived a remarkable life that began March 2, 1940, in Bivins, Texas. He was the youngest of 10 children born to Walter S. Mitchell, Sr. and Lugenie Turner Mitchell. His earthly journey ended March 12, 2020, in Dallas, following a sudden illness. He earned a BA in biology from North Texas State College (now University of North Texas) and was one of the university's first African American graduates. Charles married Vernil Richard after a short courtship, which launched lifetime of love. Charles attended Howard University College of Medicine. After completing medical school he was accepted into the orthopedic residency program at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He was a Major in the U.S. Army, served as a surgeon in Vietnam and earned the Bronze Star. After completing his residency, he and his family, which now included two sons, moved to Dallas, where he began his practice. Dr. Mitchell was a proud family man. Of his vast interests, Charles loved to travel and was a skillful photographer. Following his retirement in 2011, Charles pursued his passion of improving the lives of others. He was instrumental in establishing the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute, now the Baylor Scott & White Health and Wellness Center at the Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center and served on their board. His board service also included University of North Texas System Board of Regents, the Dallas County Medical Society, Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity Alpha Epsilon Boulé (president and secretary) and C.V. Roman Medical Society (president). He was a member of Howard University Alumni Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, National Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Texas Orthopaedic Association, Lone Star Medical Association and UT Southwestern Medical School Admissions Committee. Charles received many awards and accolades, most recently the 2018 Dallas County Medical Society Charles Max Cole, M.D., Leadership Award and 2019 C.V. Roman Medical Society Living Legend Award. He is survived by his soulmate of 58 years, Vernil; son, Charles D. Mitchell, Jr. (Millie) and their children, Tate and Charles; son, Keith Mitchell and his children, Keith Jr. and Bryce; daughter-in-law, Renée Mornay; brothers, Waylon R. Mitchell (Sedalia) and Huey P. Mitchell (Nelvia) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and close friends. Viewing will be held Friday, March 20, 2020, from 1-5 p.m. at Sandra Clark Funeral Home, Dallas, TX. Due to current CDC restrictions, the funeral will be a private family service. A public celebration will be held at a later date.
