Arthur F. Powell, born Sept. 7, 1944, of West Orange, N.J., transitioned on Dec. 28, 2019. He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, JP, and daughter, Ashley Michelle.
The Atlanta, Ga., native was the son of Gladys (Williams) and Herbert S. Powell and the brother of Robert S. Powell, all deceased.
Mr. Powell held a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Purdue University, where he received the Distinguished Science Alumni Award. Subsequently, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the IBM Hundred Percent Club and the Thurgood Marshall Award of Excellence.
Mr. Powell was founder, president and chief executive officer of Powell Capital Markets, Inc. which specializes in public finance, providing investment banking and financial advisory services to municipalities and school districts throughout New Jersey.
Prior to Powell Capital Markets, Inc., Mr. Powell was a principal in the investment banking firm of Grigsby Branford Powell Inc. and previously served as president and founder of AGH Financial Corporation, a financial services institution with corporate clients in the Northeast.
Mr. Powell served in many different executive capacities with several major corporations, including the IBM Corporation, the Itel Corporation and the Missile and Space Division of the General Electric Company.
Mr. Powell was involved in numerous civic and professional organizations and numerous other corporate boards including: Newark Museum Board of Trustees, New Jersey Institute of Technology Board of Trustees, Seton Hall University Leadership Council, New Jersey Development Authority for Small Businesses and Women's Enterprises. Mr. Powell was also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and a member of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, Franklin Township, N.J. He leaves a long legacy of love, excellence, and service.
