Sir John, KCMG. Died on 18th October, surrounded by family after illness heroically endured. Former Ambassador to Japan, Chairman of the Trustees of the British Museum, Master of Churchill College, Cambridge, Trustee of the Wordsworth Trust, linguist, string player, and lover of books, travel, wine, music, paintings, television and marzipan. He is sorely missed by his wife Julia, children Jonathan, Emily, Jessica, Alice and Olivia, and many grandchildren. Memorial service to be announced in due course.
