Westfield resident had long career in retail banking industry
Arlene (Anderson) Roden passed away peacefully on Sept. 11, 2019, surrounded by her family. She was 82.
Born in Newark, N.J., she lived in Springfield, N.J., before moving to Westfield, N.J. Arlene worked for 60 years in the retail banking industry, starting in 1955 as one of two female employees at U.S. Savings Bank in Newark, later Hudson City Savings. She completed the full course of study at the American Institute of Banking and was a student at Seton Hall University. Arlene managed branch offices in Millburn, N.J., where she was involved in local commerce and business professional women's organizations, and later in Westfield.
Arlene was married to the late Donald Roden for 56 years. She is survived by her son, Dr. Frederick Roden of New York City, his partner, Dr. Joseph Portanova, and her granddog, Hildegard.
A gathering of remembrance to celebrate Arlene's life will be held Monday, Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. in the James Ward Mansion, 169 East Broad St., Westfield. The family will also receive condolence calls, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15 at The Savannah, 111 Prospect St., Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center or The Seeing Eye would be appreciated.
