Amor Lane  
On Thursday, August 15, 2019, Amor Louis Lane of Rockville, MD, loving husband of of 63 years to Anita Lane; beloved father of Bruce (Leslie) Lane and Michele (Abe) Loewenthal; devoted grandfather of Evan, Dana, Dena, Devorah, Yonah, Yitzi, Cheski and Simcha; cherished great-grandfather of sixteen great-grandchildren. Amor was born in Philadelphia. He was selected as the male student of all Philadelphia high schools to receive the Simon Muir scholarship for academic and extra-curricular achievements to attend the four year college of his choice. He chose the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering. He interrupted his college years to serve in the U.S. Navy as a radar technician from 1944-1946. After college, he worked in the Guided Missiles and the Torpedoes Divisions at the Naval Ordinance Lab in White Oak, MD. After that, he worked for the American Machine and Foundry ("AMF") designing and building anti-submarine warfare systems and other oceanographic systems for the US Navy. Under President Johnson, Amor served on the Stratton Commission and was Executive Director of OSTAC; both commissions consisted of leaders in industry, government, and academia, to formulate plans for the US to utilize the ocean's resources, while protecting marine life and the environment. The recommendations of these commissions led directly to the creation of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Amor subsequently worked for NOAA, working with industry and setting ocean policy, and was Director of the National Ocean Pollution Program, when he retired in 1991. Amor was known as a kind and gentle man who took a keen interest in his children, grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, nephews and nieces, always providing valuable wisdom in various stages of their lives. Funeral service will be held Sunday, August 18, 12:30 p.m. at Congregation B'nai Tzedek, 10621 S Glen Road, Potomac, MD 20854 with interment to follow at Judean Memorial Gardens, Olney, MD. Shiva will be held on Sunday at the Bethesda home of Bruce and Leslie Lane, resuming on Monday and Tuesday, 1 to 4 p.m and 6 to 9 p.m., with minyan at 7 p.m. Following that, shiva will be observed at Michele and Abe Loewenthal's home in Baltimore, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., 2 to 5:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m to 12 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Jewish Committee https://www.ajc.org/washington [ajc.org].
